I saw my first firefly in the city the other night. Walking home along 23rd street, a flash hovering above the sidewalk caught my eye; and sure enough, it was a firefly. I actually felt bad for the little fella; it’s hard to believe there are too many female fireflies in Manhattan (and Chelsea, on top of it!). And yes, I know both males and females glow.
They are the coolest little bugs. I’m no fan of bugs, but these little guys just bring me back to my childhood, chasing silent flashes of light around dusk in the early summer. We would catch them, put them in a jar (with holes in the cover, of course) and watch them flash as we fell asleep. Of course, it now makes me sad that we would capture them and they’d die without having gotten to mate.
Headed to Cape Cod this weekend, I hope we get to see some; to sit and watch and relax. And this time, no jars.
Very nice site!
