While most of the 2008-Presidential talk for the last week has been focused on the resurgent Democrats, one potential Republican candidate not-so-quietly filed papers to begin exploring his own option to run.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani set up a Presidential Exploratory Committee to see if there's enough interest in him running for president and to see how well he might do in a national campaign. That committee will find encouraging numbers. According to the latest Gallup poll, Giuliani leads other probable GOP presidential candidates among Republicans, with 28% favoring Giuliani and 27% favoring Sen. John McCain (Ariz.). He's presently tied at the national level with Democrat frontrunner Hillary Clinton, and he trails her in New York State (Clinton's numbers being buoyed are certainly understandable after last week's election, in which Clinton was on the ballot).
Just as last week's election was a big win for centrists, it was also a big win for Rudy. While the name "Rudy Giuliani" might be a complete departure from past names that have filled the Oval Office, he's someone I can get excited about. It's hard to walk away from reading The Tipping Point without having some respect for what he did for New York City
And I'm not a big McCain fan. So, if Condi won't run, Giuliani will likely get my support.
