It is with great sadness that I learned today of the passing of a wonderful lady and a real trooper, Aleta Fenceroy. Along with Jean Mayberry, they comprised the internet-news duo known as Fenceberry, who for about 10 years sent daily updates to hundreds of gay people (myself among them), alerting them to the latest news about gay people and gay rights.
Aleta died of cancer, which was discovered in June. Jean, her partner in life and her partner in Fenceberry, says on a blog dedicated to Aleta that she died peacefully and with friends surrounding her.
My interactions with both of these women were always wonderful. They were so dedicated to their work of spreading news - good and bad - to people who sometimes desperately awaite their daily email. When the Massachusetts Supreme Court legalized gay marriage, Aleta stayed home from work so that their readers were up-to-date on the news.
I did an article about them for the New York Blade when they retired from Fenceberry in 2004. I'm proud to have e-known them. My heart is just a little sadder today.
