I met Jeff Cook about two years ago when I was working at the New York Blade and he was running the New York Log Cabin Republicans. I've moved on to bigger and better things, and so has Jeff. He's now running for Congress in New York's 19th District. He's an openly gay Republican who is focused on restoring financial discipline, empowering local communities and strengthening the American family (which includes opposing legislation that would prevent gay couples from marrying).
He's trying to topple Sue Kelly, who presently holds the seat. My biggest beef with her: as opposed to Jeff, she supports the Federal Marriage Amendment. And she has reason to worry. The latest poll shows a 41-percent approval rating in her district (that's even below President Bush's approval rating!); and it's only 53 percent among Republicans. She's a bit nervous, trying to throw as many positive press releases and as much pork at her district as she can.
If you want to put another pro-gay voice in Congress, then please support and contribute to Jeff Cook's campaign. Whether you're a Democrat, Republican or neither, the way we're going to stop the religious conservative wing of the GOP is by stopping them in the primaries. Donating to Jeff's campaign will keep an anti-gay Congresswoman out of her own election; and that is a win for all of us.
