I've been holding my judgement on Logo, the nation's first basic-cable gay TV network, until I had seen enough to really get a sense of it. I've seen enough; and I still don't have a sense of it.
The impetus for writing tonight is a news segment they did on Hurricane Katrina. It was quite possibly the worst news segment I have ever seen. I'm gay. I couldn't give a shit about how to help the gay and lesbian group in Mississippi. People are starving, looting, being killed - and I want to help them whether they're gay, straight, black, white, man, woman or freaking illegal immigrant!
Plus, the news segment had a video running that had absolutely nothing to do with the voiceover. Nothing. A car driving into a river and the guy talking about helping people with HIV.
Yeah, it's been great to see some of the movies they have getting played over and over and over and over. But, I haven't liked much of the original programming. While Logo has said they want to break down stereotypes, they've got nothing but REALLY GAY guys on the network (Scott Thompson, Graham Norton, Will Wikle (whom I really like, but they make him look gay as Christmas on that show), Ant).
Even Open Bar, which is about the opening of a gay bar just two blocks from where I used to live in West Hollywood, started to look rather stereotypical in the first episode. But, I know and like the bar manager, Yawar, so I'll definitely give it a chance.
