Just say 'faggot'

I missed an episode of Paula Zahn Now from about a month ago that talked about the word "faggot." Or rather, they talked about the power of "the F word" - unfortunately, all of the people on the show danced around what the word was and wouldn't say it.

To me, this whole discussion of "the F word" exacerbates the problem. People like HRC head Democrat Joe Solmonese, who refused to use the word "faggot" on Zahn's show, give power to the word by refusing to use it. By avoiding it, people hand the word over to those (often homophobic) people who have no problem using it. It's the same with "nigger." One of the positive things to come out of the rap culture in the last 10-15 years has been how much they use "nigger" in their songs. By doing that, they have reduced the power of that word when it's used by racists.

Be clear about what you're talking about - just say "faggot" if that's what you mean.

With all that said, I'm certainly not advocating the hate or nastiness that is behind the homophobic use of the word. People use the word in a way that is incredibly distasteful. But, instead of getting on TV and telling everyone how powerful the word is, and then avoiding using it because it's so powerful, gay people should start using it as much as possible; And we should allow people to use it in non-derogatory ways without having us trying to get them fired or boycotting them. The word has now power unless we let it.
