Fire Island 2005, Episode V - just relax

I love the woods when it rains. There is just an incredible smell that emanates from the forest when it is wet. Add to that a stiff breeze coming off the ocean, and you have my paradise. That's what greeted me at the Fire Island Pines Friday night as I disembarked form the ferry and walked down Ocean Walk en route to our house. I loved it so much, that I turned around once I dropped off my bags, umbrella in hand, and walked around the Pines for a bit. I even came across a couple deer munching on some damp undergrowth. Just lovely.

Friday night, Dan and I found ourselves alone in the house (some housemates were out for dinner, others skipped Friday because of the rain). We made dinner and went to bed relatively early.

The weather Saturday and Sunday was just gorgeous. Even the passing rainstorm on Saturday afternoon, which I watched from afar as it descended upon us with lightning and rain, then passed 30 minutes later as quickly as it had come, was delightful. After I played volleyball on the beach that afternoon, we went to a friend's house for a fun game of Scattergories.

Instead of heading to "high tea" or "low tea" (ugh ugh), we decided to park ourselves on the benches along the harbor while people passed by as the sun set on Saturday. It was great - we probably talked to twice as many people as we would have if we had thrown ourselves into the throngs in the bars. Saturday night was dinner at home (Dan cooked a wonderful meal of chicken kabobs, despite telling me all along that he couldn't cook) and early to bed again.

Sunday was a lazy day. We hit Bay Bar in the morning so I could write a bit (so many people pass by asking if there is WiFi there, which there is) and the beach so we could sun a bit. We left on the 3:55pm ferry so I could be back for football practice.

Overall, a lovely weekend. Very relaxing. I never felt I had to be anywhere, never felt anxious about anything I had to do. It was probably the first full weekend of that since we started going out there.
