VH1's dumbass top 200 pop icons
I love lists. Top 10 this, top 20 that. Love 'em. But, there are two problems with most lists that are put out by media outlets. First is that they try to make their list "interesting" by, instead of just picking who really should be #1, topping their list with an "interesting" choice. The second is that they far too often weigh the more recent entries to the list too heavily.
Thus are the problems with VH1's list of the top 200 pop culture icons.
At the top of the list is Oprah. Now, Oprah certainly deserves to be on the list. Maybe somewhere in the teens. But, #1? Michael Jackson was #10. Elvis was #3! I can only imagine that a bunch of women put the list together and decided to put a woman on top.
Tom Cruise was #5 - which reinforces the idea that a bunch of women made this dumb list. That put Cruise two spots ahead of Madonna and seven spots ahead of the Beatles. He's a big star, but the fifth-biggest pop culture icon in history? No.
Other stupidities from the list: Jennifer Lopez was #15, but Mickey Mouse was #17; the cast of Friends was #11, but the Beatles were #12.
My personal top-10 pop culture icons of all time:
1) Elvis Presley
2) Michael Jackson
3) Mickey Mouse
4) The Beatles
5) Marilyn Monroe
6) Madonna
7) Lucille Ball
8) Babe Ruth
9) Superman
10) John Wayne

I would agree mostly with the above but would probably include Freddie Mercury in my top-10. Phil www.fab4beatles.co.uk
